Daily life
Porto is a large city on the coast; Valencia is a large city on the coast. Porto offers much of Lisbon's charm with lower rents, a real sense of a working city and Atlantic beaches by tram. Winters are wetter and cooler than in the south, and flights to North America are fewer. Valencia is big enough for culture, a metro and a city beach, yet flat, bikeable and cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. It is a favorite for families and remote workers, with good weather year-round and a modest flight network to North America.
Living in Porto: the upsides and downsides
- Rents lower than Lisbon in our estimates

Living in Valencia: the upsides and downsides
- Flat, bikeable city with a huge river-bed park
- Beach and old town in the same transit network
- Rents lower than Madrid and Barcelona (about EUR 16 per square meter in September 2026)
