Daily life
Faro & the Algarve is a mid-size city on the coast; Porto is a large city on the coast. Faro is the practical base for the Algarve: an airport, a hospital, a university and an old town on the ria, close to some of Europe's best beaches. The coast is the retirement magnet of Portugal, so expect long summers, English everywhere and a seasonal feel. Porto offers much of Lisbon's charm with lower rents, a real sense of a working city and Atlantic beaches by tram. Winters are wetter and cooler than in the south, and flights to North America are fewer.
