The short version

Sweden is a good fit for employed professionals, families and tech or life-science workers who already have a job offer, but 2026 brought tougher rules: the salary floor for a work permit rose to 90% of the median, and permanent residence permits are generally no longer granted since 12 July 2026. It is not built for remote workers or retirees.

Why people move here

  • Very high English proficiency (EF EPI rank 8 in 2025)
  • Generous parental leave and child-friendly society
  • Large startup and tech scene around Stockholm
  • Fast processing for highly qualified workers (about 1 month for complete applications)
  • Easy access to forests, lakes and archipelago
  • Lower price level than Denmark or Norway

Think twice if

  • Work permit salary floor rose to SEK 34,470 a month under new 2026 rules
  • Permanent residence permits generally no longer granted since 12 July 2026
  • Citizenship now needs 8 years, self-support and language and society tests
  • Stockholm housing is extremely hard to find
  • Long dark winters
  • GPI rank 40 in 2026 is the lowest in this batch, so do your own neighborhood research

Best for: Families, Career movers, English speakers, Entrepreneurs

Moving to Sweden works best for professionals with a job offer, tech and life-science workers, and families who want strong parental leave, safe cities and easy access to forests and lakes. English is nearly universal (Sweden ranks 8th in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index), and the cost of living is lower than in Denmark or Norway, with Eurostat's 2024 price level at 123.0 against an EU average of 100.

It is also a country in the middle of tightening its rules. Since 1 June 2026, a work permit needs a salary of at least 90% of the median, which is SEK 34,470 a month (about €3,070). Since 12 July 2026, permanent residence permits are generally no longer granted. Citizenship now needs 8 years of residence, language and society tests, and proof of self-support. Sweden has no nomad or retirement visa.

Rules change fast, so check the Swedish Migration Agency before you commit. This guide covers the routes, costs, taxes and how to get started.

Is Sweden right for you?

Sweden suits people with a signed employment contract from a Swedish employer. It rewards you if you value long parental leave, flat workplace hierarchies, forests and lakes on your doorstep, and a strong welfare system. It is less suited to remote workers with foreign clients, because there is no nomad route, and to anyone who hates dark winters: Stockholm's January highs average about 1 C and the winter light is short.

Swedes tend to be polite and private, and social life often builds slowly through work, neighbours and hobbies. Many newcomers find the practical side more difficult than the social side, especially housing and the personal ID number that unlocks banking. If you are still deciding between countries, take the Where should I live in Europe? quiz.

Work permit and visa options for Americans (and Brits, Canadians, Australians)

Citizens of the US, UK, Canada and Australia all need a residence permit for work in Sweden. The routes we cover:

  • Work permit for employees. You need a signed employment contract, pay of at least SEK 34,470 a month (90% of the median of SEK 38,300), and employer-paid insurance. Some occupations on a government list and some groups, such as researchers and students switching permits, only need 75% of the median. The fee is SEK 2,200 (about €196). The permit lasts up to 2 years, is tied to your employer and occupation, and family members can apply with you. See Sweden work permit.
  • EU Blue Card. The threshold is SEK 53,625 a month from 15 July 2026 (about €4,780), and the first card can run for up to 4 years. The fee is SEK 2,000.
  • Self-employed permit. You need at least SEK 200,000 (about €17,820) in a bank account in your name, a viable business and at least 51% ownership. Details: Sweden self-employed permit.

From 1 June 2026 applicants staying a year or less must also show comprehensive health insurance. Stricter good-conduct requirements apply from 13 July 2026, and new family-immigration rules from 1 October 2026. Extensions applied for between 1 June and 1 December 2026 are assessed against the earlier 80% of median rule.

Processing times vary. The agency reports that 75% of recent complete applications for highly qualified workers were decided within 1 month, while other employees waited up to 4 months for complete applications. Check the official page before you apply.

Cost of living in Sweden

Sweden is cheaper than Copenhagen or Oslo but still expensive by European standards. Eurostat's 2024 price level index of 123.0 puts it above the EU average. Rent drives the difference: Stockholm is the pinch point, with a queue-based market and few vacancies. Heating is often included in rent, which keeps utility costs low.

For Stockholm our estimates (renting a bit outside the centre) are about €2,300 a month for a single person, €3,300 for a couple and €5,500 for a family of four. They are our estimates from official statistics and public prices, not quotes. Sweden has no statutory minimum wage; pay floors come from collective agreements.

Where to live: cities compared

Stockholm is the main destination for international hires: it has the headquarters, the tech scene and the largest English-speaking job market. Stockholm municipality had 995,574 residents at the end of 2024 and the county about 2.47 million.

Södermalm is the hip pick, Vasastan and Kungsholmen suit couples and families, Östermalm is upscale, and Hammarby Sjöstad is a modern waterfront district. Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala are well known alternatives, but we have not researched them yet. For a Nordic comparison, see Stockholm vs Copenhagen and Stockholm vs Oslo.

Taxes for newcomers

Swedish employees pay a municipal income tax that averages about 32%, charged from the first krona. A 20% state income tax applies above SEK 643,000 (about €57,300), taking the top marginal rate to about 52% (our arithmetic from PwC's rates). Capital income is generally taxed at 30%. Employers pay social contributions on top of salary, so they do not appear on your pay slip.

An expert tax relief for qualifying foreign key personnel has historically exempted 25% of salary for a limited period, but we could not verify the 2026 terms. Ask your employer and the Swedish Tax Agency whether you qualify. You are generally a Swedish tax resident if you have a permanent home in Sweden or stay continuously for more than six months.

The US has a tax treaty and a totalization agreement with Sweden, and the UK has a tax treaty with Sweden too. Americans still file US returns. Tax questions are specialist work, so get a cross-border advisor.

Healthcare and insurance

Healthcare is run by the regions and funded by taxes, with low fixed patient fees and an annual cap on what you pay. Residents get access once they have a personnummer, and the 1177 phone and online service is the entry point. Waiting times for non-urgent care can be long. Some employers provide supplementary private insurance, and anyone staying a year or less on a work permit must show comprehensive health cover.

Banking, personnummer and paperwork

The personnummer (personal identity number) is the key to nearly everything: it comes from the Tax Agency after you register as a resident. Most banks require it for an account, and the BankID e-ID that you need for most services depends on the bank account, which makes the first weeks awkward. Book the Tax Agency ID appointment early and ask your employer which bank to use.

Language and daily life

You can work and shop in English almost anywhere in Stockholm. Learning Swedish will matter for long-term life and for citizenship, which requires Swedish at B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing, plus a test on Swedish society. The agency says the new language test may be introduced later than planned.

Sweden is on Central European Time, giving about 2 hours of overlap with a US East Coast working day. The emergency number is 112, and the plugs are types C and F.

Downsides to know

  • Tougher rules. Work permit pay floor now SEK 34,470 a month, plus new rules on health insurance and good conduct.
  • No permanent residence permits generally since 12 July 2026, which changes your long-term plan.
  • Citizenship takes 8 years and requires proof of self-support, which the agency lists as SEK 250,200 a year (about €22,300).
  • Housing. Stockholm's rental market is very hard to enter.
  • Dark winters. Stockholm's January highs average about 1 C.
  • Safety perception. Sweden ranked 40th in the 2026 Global Peace Index, the lowest in our Nordic and Austrian batch, so research neighbourhoods rather than assuming.

Citizenship and long-term stay

Sweden's adult citizenship page now says the main rule is at least 8 years of continuous habitual residence. Requirements include a permanent residence permit in most cases (with some exceptions), language and society tests, self-support, and good conduct. The fee is SEK 2,900 (about €258), and the agency reports that 75% of recent cases were decided within 53 months. Because the permanent permit change is recent, check the Migration Agency for how it affects you.

Getting started checklist

  1. Confirm your salary meets SEK 34,470 a month (or the lower rate if your occupation qualifies).
  2. Get a signed employment contract and ask your employer to confirm insurance.
  3. Apply on the Migration Agency website and keep your application complete.
  4. Line up housing early, ideally through your employer or a relocation service.
  5. Register with the Tax Agency for your personnummer.
  6. Open a bank account and activate BankID.
  7. Check how the 2026 rule changes affect your long-term plans.
  8. Start Swedish lessons.

Compare Sweden with Denmark, Norway and Austria before you choose.

Moving to Sweden: FAQ

What is the salary requirement for a Swedish work permit in 2026?

You need at least SEK 34,470 a month, which is 90% of the median salary of SEK 38,300 as of 16 June 2026 (about €3,070). Some occupations and groups need only 75%. The salary also has to meet collective agreements or common practice. Check the Migration Agency page before applying.

Can you get permanent residence in Sweden in 2026?

Generally no. The Migration Agency says permanent residence permits are generally no longer granted from 12 July 2026, though people who already have one are not affected. Some temporary-permit holders can apply for citizenship without one. Confirm your situation with the agency.

Is Sweden cheaper than Denmark or Norway?

Yes, on Eurostat's 2024 price level index: Sweden is at 123.0, Denmark at 142.8 and Norway at 134.1, with the EU average at 100. Housing in Stockholm is still hard to find, and our estimate for a single person is about €2,300 a month.

Can Americans work remotely from Sweden?

Sweden has no digital nomad or remote-work visa. Working for a foreign employer while living in Sweden can create residence and tax questions, so the usual routes are a Swedish job offer or a self-employed permit. Get advice before relying on any other approach.

How long until you can become a Swedish citizen?

The main rule is 8 years of continuous habitual residence, with Swedish language and society tests, self-support and good conduct. The Migration Agency reports that 75% of recent cases were decided within 53 months. The rules changed on 6 June 2026, so check the current requirements.

Do you need Swedish to live in Sweden?

Not to start, since English is widely spoken. You will need Swedish for long-term integration and for citizenship, which asks for B1 reading and listening and A2 speaking and writing. The agency says the new citizenship language test may be delayed.
