Which European visa fits you?
You work remotely. A digital nomad visa is the cleanest route. Income thresholds range from a little over €2,000 to around €4,500 a month, and some countries tax you as a resident from day one while others don’t.
You’re retired or living on savings. Look at passive income visas such as Portugal’s D7 or Spain’s non-lucrative visa. Most bar you from working locally, and most require private health insurance. See retiring in Europe.
You have capital to invest. Several golden visa programs are still open, but Spain and Ireland have closed theirs and Portugal no longer accepts real estate.
You have a job offer or in-demand skills. Work permits and the EU Blue Card are the most direct route to permanent residence in countries like Germany and the Netherlands. Americans with a small business can also look at the Dutch DAFT visa.
You have European ancestry. You may already be entitled to citizenship. Start with our citizenship by descent guide.
Requirements change often and differ by consulate. Always confirm on the official page linked from each route. This is research, not legal advice.
