The short version

Porto offers much of Lisbon's charm with lower rents, a real sense of a working city and Atlantic beaches by tram. Winters are wetter and cooler than in the south, and flights to North America are fewer.

Why live here

  • Rents lower than Lisbon in our estimates
  • Compact, walkable center and a good metro
  • Beaches, the Douro valley and northern Portugal on your doorstep
  • A growing tech and startup scene

Why not

  • Rainy, grey winters (about 1,237 mm of rain a year)
  • Steep hills and cobbles
  • Fewer direct flights to the US than Lisbon
  • Smaller English-speaking community than Lisbon

Living in Porto gives you much of Lisbon's charm with lower rents, a compact center and Atlantic beaches at the end of a tram line. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,850 a month, a couple needs around €2,700 and a family of four about €3,900 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €1,100 a month in our estimate.

It suits remote workers, families and budget-minded newcomers who don't mind rain and hills. The trade-offs are wet winters, fewer direct flights to North America and a smaller English-speaking community than Lisbon.

Summers are comfortable rather than scorching, and the sea breeze helps. Winters are grey, damp and mild; plan for a good raincoat and ask about mold and heating when you view apartments.

Getting around

The center is compact and walkable, though steep. A metro system serves the airport and suburbs, buses and historic trams fill in, and commuter trains reach nearby towns. A monthly pass is about €40 in our estimate. Trains to Lisbon take about three hours, and the Douro valley wine country is a day trip away. Taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive, though many streets in the old center are too narrow and steep for cars, so you will walk or ride the tram. Cycling is possible along the river and the coast but hard on the hills.

Porto's airport has nonstops to Newark, to Toronto and, seasonally, Montreal, plus many UK cities. Most other US connections go via Lisbon or London, so Porto is less convenient than Lisbon for frequent flights home.

Work, coworking and internet

Porto has a growing tech and startup scene, with coworking spaces and a hot desk costing about €150 a month in our estimate. Home internet is about €35 a month. Portugal is 5 hours ahead of US Eastern, so you overlap with Eastern working hours for about 3 hours in the afternoon.

Healthcare and international schools

The national health service is tax-funded but busy; many expats add private insurance, which we estimate at about €40 to €120 a month per adult. Porto has private hospitals and clinics with English-speaking staff. The area has international and bilingual schools; compare fees and availability early, since our family budget excludes tuition.

The downsides

  • Rain. Around 1,237 mm a year, so expect many grey days.
  • Hills. Steep streets and cobbles are tiring.
  • Fewer direct flights to the US than Lisbon.
  • Smaller English-speaking community, so more Portuguese helps.
  • Rising rents as demand from foreigners grows.

How Porto compares

Lisbon vs Porto is the main comparison: Lisbon is sunnier, bigger and pricier; Porto is cheaper, rainier and more compact. Porto vs Valencia is a good test if you want a mid-size city with a beach. For the sunniest weather in Portugal, look at Faro & the Algarve.
