Madrid vs Valencia: which is better to live in?
Quick verdict
Valencia is the cheaper of the two: our estimate for a single person is about €300 a month less than Madrid, mostly because of rent. Daily life
Madrid is a capital / metropolis; Valencia is a large city on the coast. Madrid is Spain's capital and its best-connected city: world-class museums, a superb metro, big-city jobs and nonstops to much of the US. It is landlocked, hot in summer and cold in winter, and rents sit near the top of the Spanish range. Valencia is big enough for culture, a metro and a city beach, yet flat, bikeable and cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. It is a favorite for families and remote workers, with good weather year-round and a modest flight network to North America.
Living in Madrid: the upsides and downsides

- Downside: Rents are high: about EUR 23 per square meter citywide in September 2026
- Downside: No beach; the sea is 4 to 5 hours away by road
Living in Valencia: the upsides and downsides
- Flat, bikeable city with a huge river-bed park
- Beach and old town in the same transit network
- Rents lower than Madrid and Barcelona (about EUR 16 per square meter in September 2026)
- Downside: Direct US flights are limited and seasonal
- Downside: Humid, hot summers
