The short version

Valencia is big enough for culture, a metro and a city beach, yet flat, bikeable and cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. It is a favorite for families and remote workers, with good weather year-round and a modest flight network to North America.

Why live here

  • Flat, bikeable city with a huge river-bed park
  • Beach and old town in the same transit network
  • Rents lower than Madrid and Barcelona (about EUR 16 per square meter in September 2026)
  • Mild winters and about 2,700 sunshine hours
  • Strong family and nomad scene

Why not

  • Direct US flights are limited and seasonal
  • Humid, hot summers
  • English less common than in Barcelona or Lisbon
  • Occasional flooding risk in the wider region, so check your area

Living in Valencia gets you a flat, bikeable city with a city beach, a huge river-bed park and mild winters, at rents lower than Madrid or Barcelona. By our estimate, a comfortable single budget is about €1,700 a month, a couple needs around €2,500 and a family of four about €3,700 before school fees. A one-bed in the center runs about €950 a month in our estimate.

It is a favorite with families and remote workers who want big-city amenities without big-city prices. The trade-offs are humid summers, limited direct flights to North America and less English than in Barcelona.

Spring and fall are lovely. Summer nights stay warm and humid, so air conditioning matters. Heavy rain can come in autumn, and the October 2024 floods hit parts of the wider region, so ask about flood risk in the area you choose.

Getting around

Valencia is flat, compact and bikeable, with a metro, trams, buses and bike lanes along the old riverbed. A monthly pass is about €35 in our estimate. High-speed trains reach Madrid in under two hours and Barcelona in about three.

Valencia's airport has seasonal service to Newark and year-round service to Montreal, plus many UK routes, based on Wikipedia's airport listing. Most North Americans connect through Madrid or Barcelona, so frequent transatlantic travel is less convenient than from Lisbon.

Work, coworking and internet

Valencia has a growing nomad and startup scene with coworking spaces. A hot desk costs about €150 a month in our estimate, and home internet about €35. Spain is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern, so you overlap with Eastern hours for about 2 hours in the late afternoon.

Healthcare and international schools

The public health system is run by the region. If you do not contribute to Social Security, you can join through the monthly agreement after a year of residence, at €60 a month under 65. Many expats keep private cover, which we estimate at about €60 to €150 a month per adult.

Valencia has international and bilingual schools; they charge tuition and can have waiting lists. Our family budget excludes tuition. Families often like the parks and the flat streets.

The downsides

  • Limited direct flights to the US and Canada.
  • Humid summers that can feel heavy.
  • Less English than in Barcelona or Lisbon.
  • Flood awareness. The wider region saw severe floods in October 2024.
  • Rising rents as demand grows.

How Valencia compares

Barcelona vs Valencia is the key comparison: Barcelona is bigger and pricier, Valencia is flatter and calmer. Madrid vs Valencia shows the beach-versus-capital trade-off. If you are weighing Portugal, try Lisbon vs Valencia.
