Daily life
Split is a mid-size city on the coast; Valencia is a large city on the coast. Split is a walkable Dalmatian city with a Roman palace at its center, beaches inside the city and mountains behind it. It is the nomad favorite on Croatia's coast: about €1,950 a month for a single person in our estimate, and English works nearly everywhere. Summer crowds and housing seasonality are the trade-offs. Valencia is big enough for culture, a metro and a city beach, yet flat, bikeable and cheaper than Madrid or Barcelona. It is a favorite for families and remote workers, with good weather year-round and a modest flight network to North America.
Living in Split: the upsides and downsides
- City beach at Bacvice and the Marjan forest park within walking distance
- Croatia ranks 2nd in EF's English index, and you can feel it in daily life
- Island ferries from the port, with the mountains above the city
- Downside: Summer rents and crowds: cruise ships and short-term lets squeeze housing
- Downside: Cooler, wetter winter than Cyprus or Malta
Living in Valencia: the upsides and downsides
- Flat, bikeable city with a huge river-bed park
- Beach and old town in the same transit network
- Rents lower than Madrid and Barcelona (about EUR 16 per square meter in September 2026)
- Downside: Direct US flights are limited and seasonal
- Downside: Humid, hot summers
