Estonia e-Residency: A Digital ID, Not a Visa
Estonia e-Residency is a government-issued digital identity that lets you start and run an EU company online. It is not a visa, a residence permit, a way to live in Estonia or the EU, or a path to citizenship. The official site is explicit that it does not grant citizenship, physical residency or the right to enter Estonia or the European Union.
The state fee is €150, and the card has to be collected in person. This page explains what the program does, who it suits, how the tax picture works and what to look at if your real goal is to live in Estonia. Check the official e-Residency page before you apply. Who qualifies
Anyone can apply, based on their existing citizenship, as long as the application passes the identity check. It suits founders, freelancers and online businesses who want an EU company with fully digital administration. It does not suit people who want to move to Estonia, because it provides no residence.
What you actually get
You receive a digital ID card and the software to sign documents and authenticate online. With it you can register an Estonian company, sign contracts, and manage company filings remotely. The official site says the ID is for online authentication, not as a physical identification or a travel document, and it does not replace the legal requirements for travelling or residing in the EU.
What it does not give you
- No visa, and no visa-free travel
- No residence permit, and no right to live or work in Estonia
- No time counting toward permanent residence or citizenship
- No tax residency for you personally
- No automatic shield from foreign tax rules on your company
If you want to live in Estonia, you need a separate permit. The closest remote-worker route is the Estonia Digital Nomad Visa.
Step-by-step application
- Apply online: choose a pickup location, prepare your documents, fill in the application and pay the fee.
- Wait for approval. The identity check takes up to 30 days, and card delivery takes 2 to 5 weeks.
- Collect your card in person at your chosen location, bringing the ID you used to apply.
- Install the DigiDoc software and start using your digital ID, which activates within 24 hours of pickup.
- Register your company, find an accountant and a payment solution.
Costs and timeline
The state fee is €150, paid with the online application. You also bear the cost of traveling to collect the card, plus your company's own costs, which we have not priced.
Plan for the official timelines of up to 30 days for the identity check plus 2 to 5 weeks for delivery. Opening a bank account for an e-Resident company can be difficult because banks apply strict checks, and fintech providers are a common workaround.
Taxes
e-Residency does not change where you are personally tax resident. Your personal tax residency stays where it already is. A company you form is an Estonian tax resident, but if you manage it from another country, that country may treat it as resident too and tax its profits. Estonia has many double-tax treaties, and the official guidance says you should not be taxed twice, but you must still understand your home country's rules.
Estonia taxes company profit when it is distributed, at 22% in 2026 according to a December 2025 tax-news summary, with the 24% increase cancelled. US citizens with a foreign company have extra reporting duties to the IRS. This is not tax advice, so talk to a cross-border tax professional.
Family members
Because e-Residency gives no right of residence, relatives gain no status through it.
