Sweden Work Permit: Requirements After the 2026 Rule Changes
A Sweden work permit lets a non-EU citizen work for a Swedish employer, and the rules got stricter in 2026. Since 1 June 2026 you need a salary of at least 90% of Sweden's median, which was SEK 34,470 a month (about €3,070) from 16 June 2026. The permit lasts up to 2 years, is tied to your employer and occupation, and costs SEK 2,200 (about €196).
Permanent residence permits are also generally no longer granted since 12 July 2026, which changes the long-term picture. This guide covers who qualifies, the pay rule, documents, steps and what to watch. Always check the Swedish Migration Agency page for employees before you apply.

Who qualifies
You need a signed employment contract with a Swedish employer, and the job must meet all requirements on its own (you cannot combine two or more jobs). Pay and conditions must also match collective agreements or common practice, which may mean a higher salary than the minimum. Americans, Brits, Canadians and Australians all apply as non-EU citizens.

- Exempt groups: certain occupations on a government list and some groups, such as researchers and students switching permits, need only 75% of the median.
- EU Blue Card: at least SEK 53,625 a month from 15 July 2026 (about €4,780), no points, first card up to 4 years, fee SEK 2,000.
- Extensions: if you hold a permit granted before 1 June 2026 and apply to extend between 1 June and 1 December 2026, the earlier 80% rule applies; from 2 December the 90% rule applies.

- Employer-provided health, life, occupational injury and pension insurance by your start date.
- If your job lasts a year or less, comprehensive health insurance covering the whole stay (new from 1 June 2026).
- Proof of family relationships if relatives apply with you.
Step-by-step application
- Get a signed contract meeting the salary rule.
- Your employer provides the offer details; you apply through the Migration Agency, normally from outside Sweden.

- Wait for the decision; do not start work until the permit is granted.
- After arrival, register with the Tax Agency for a personnummer and set up banking.

An expert tax relief has existed for qualifying key personnel, but confirm current terms with the Swedish Tax Agency. See moving to Sweden.
Family members
Spouses, registered or cohabiting partners and children under 21 can apply at the same time, subject to a maintenance requirement. Adult family members and children turning 16 this year may work. New family-immigration rules apply from 1 October 2026.

Permanent residence permits are generally no longer granted from 12 July 2026, though existing holders are not affected.
