Daily life
Faro & the Algarve is a mid-size city on the coast; Lisbon is a capital / metropolis on the coast. Faro is the practical base for the Algarve: an airport, a hospital, a university and an old town on the ria, close to some of Europe's best beaches. The coast is the retirement magnet of Portugal, so expect long summers, English everywhere and a seasonal feel. Lisbon is the best-connected and most international city in Portugal, with sunshine, a big nomad scene and direct flights to the US. It is also the most expensive Portuguese city and the one with the tightest housing, so budget for rent first.
