- No direct North America flights; connect via Paris or elsewhere
- Smaller international community than Paris

Best neighborhoods for expats
Presqu'île is the central peninsula between the rivers, with shops and restaurants, and suits singles and couples. Croix-Rousse is a hilltop village feel with markets and artists, good for couples and creatives. Vieux Lyon is a Renaissance old town that is lovely but touristy.
Confluence is modern and riverside, with newer buildings popular with professionals and young families. Montchat and Monplaisir are residential and calm, which suits families. Villeurbanne is student-heavy and near Part-Dieu station, with cheaper rents.

Lyon sits between oceanic and continental climates. Using 1991–2020 normals from Bron, the mean daily high is about 7.1°C in January and 28.2°C in July, and January lows are near 1.1°C. Annual rainfall is near 821 mm and sunshine around 2,050 hours.
Summers are hot, and winters are cold and gray, though the Alps are within reach for skiing and hiking. Spring and fall are the best seasons.
Getting around
Lyon has four metro lines, trams, buses and funiculars, and the city is hilly in places and flat along the rivers. The TCL monthly pass is about €76. TGV trains reach Paris in about two hours.
Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (LYS) has mostly European flights; North Americans usually connect via Paris or another hub, which is the main practical downside. You can reach the Alps and the Beaujolais by car or train for weekends.
Work, coworking and internet
Lyon has a diverse economy including pharma, biotech, gaming, logistics and services, and a large university population. Coworking desks run about €200 a month, and fiber is widespread. There is no digital nomad visa in France, so check the visa guides for the route that fits.
Healthcare and international schools
Legal residents join the public system and most add a complementary policy (mutuelle), which we estimate at about €60–200 a month. Lyon has a university hospital network and international sections in some schools; fees are not in our data, so ask directly. Our editorial family score is 4 out of 5.
The downsides
- Weather: hot summers and cold, gray winters.
- Flights: no direct North America service.
- Expat community: smaller than in Paris.
- Traffic and bureaucracy: typical big-city French friction.
- English: fewer English-language services than in the capital.
How Lyon compares
Lyon is cheaper and calmer than Paris, with less international scale. See Paris vs Lyon. For a similar-feeling Italian university city, look at Bologna, and for a coastal alternative compare with Nice. Another option is Bordeaux, which is smaller and wetter.
