Best neighborhoods for expats
Chartrons has antique shops, wine merchants and a riverside feel, which suits couples and professionals. Saint-Pierre and the Golden Triangle are the historic center with shops and restaurants, good for singles and short stays. Bastide on the right bank is regenerating, with parks and tram access, popular with families and budget renters.
Saint-Michel has a market and a diverse, working-class character. Caudéran is leafy and residential, with villas and schools. Bacalan and Bassins à Flot are former docks with modern buildings near the wine museum, suited to remote workers and young professionals.

Bordeaux has an oceanic climate. Using 1991–2020 normals from Mérignac airport, the mean daily high is about 10.5°C in January and 27.6°C in August, and January lows are near 3.7°C. Annual rainfall is about 925 mm and sunshine around 2,070 hours.
Winters are mild but wet. Summers are warm and sometimes hot. Fall is harvest season in the vineyards.
Getting around
The center is walkable, with trams and buses covering the rest, and the city is flat and bike-friendly. TGV trains reach Paris in about two hours. The Atlantic coast, Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat are about an hour away by car or train.
Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) has mostly European flights; North Americans usually connect via Paris or another hub, which is the main practical downside for people who fly home often.
Work, coworking and internet
Bordeaux's economy mixes wine, aerospace and defense, tech and services, and a growing group of remote workers drawn by the TGV. Coworking desks run about €180 a month, and fiber is widespread. France has no digital nomad visa, so most newcomers use the visitor, talent or freelance routes.
Healthcare and international schools
Legal residents join the public system and most add a complementary policy (mutuelle), which we estimate at about €60–200 a month. Bordeaux has a university hospital and some international sections; fees are not in our data, so ask schools directly. Our editorial family score is 4 out of 5.
The downsides
- Flights: no direct North America service.
- Weather: wet winters, with about 925 mm of rain a year.
- Housing: tighter since remote workers moved in.
- English: fewer English-language services than in Paris.
- Geography: the city has no beach itself and no mountains nearby.
