Daily life
Amsterdam is a capital / metropolis; Rotterdam is a large city. Amsterdam is the most international city in our set: English works nearly everywhere, the cycling is easy, and Schiphol connects you to almost anywhere. The cost is housing: rent is among the highest we cover and finding a flat is competitive. Rotterdam is Amsterdam's grittier, cheaper cousin: modern architecture, a huge port economy and a creative scene, with rents roughly a fifth lower per m2 on our data. Pick it if you want Dutch city life and fast trains to Amsterdam and The Hague without the Amsterdam price tag.
Living in Amsterdam: the upsides and downsides
- English works in shops, offices and most municipal services
- Flat, bike-first, compact
- Schiphol nonstops to many US and Canadian cities
- Downside: Rent and housing scarcity, with long waits for mid-priced rentals
- Downside: Rainy, windy, mild weather with limited sunshine
Living in Rotterdam: the upsides and downsides
- Rents per m2 well below Amsterdam on current figures
- Modern architecture, markets and a lively food scene
- Direct trains to Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Brussels
- Downside: Rents are still rising fast (up 5.0 percent year over year in the Pararius report)
- Downside: Fewer international flights; Schiphol is the realistic gateway
Visas and residency
Both cities are in Netherlands, so you’d use the same residence routes either way:
- Netherlands DAFT Visa (Dutch American Friendship Treaty) — Entrepreneur route, open, €4,500 investment
- Netherlands Highly Skilled Migrant Permit — Work permit, open, €5,942/mo income
